ThermalTake Toughpower 1500W Modular Power Supply - Review

Citat:
It is hard not to be impressed by the Thermaltake Toughpower 1,500W power supply, it is a monster design capable of delivering over 1,600W when needed.

If anyone needs this level of power on a regular basis, I would be surprised because the most powerful system we have in our offices is a dual GTX590 QUAD Sli system with Intel Core i7 3960X overclocked to 4.8ghz. This system demands 940W under full load and the Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W power supply dealt with it without even a tiny flutter.
On a design level, the Toughpower 1,500W appealed to me. The appearance is subtle and the paintwork is first class and it will fit into any system build without standing out as an ugly eyesore. Just be careful that your computer case can accommodate the power supply, as it measures 220mm in length.

Technically, there is little to fault. Noise suppression is fantastic, measuring only 25mV from the +12v output at full load. One of the best results we have recorded from such a massive power supply. Load regulation is also strong and it dealt with our intensive cross loading test without a problem. The +3.3V fluctuates a little, but nothing serious enough to cause instability problems.
The large, high quality Young Lin fan copes with the demanding environment well, never creating a racket, even when the supply is delivering over 1,300W.
Our only concern, and it is one I don’t think we have ever have to mention before, would be the hardwired cabling implementation.
The hole in the chassis is too small, causing strain on the side panel and more seriously there is no cable sleeving as they enter the chassis. Without a protective grommet in place this raised an eyebrow in our labs as there is potential for frayed cabling over the long term. I would actually try and insert my own protective material just as the cables enter the chassis, for peace of mind. I am surprised that this issue was not caught before the product hit the retail channels.
Currently this power supply is available from Novatech in the United Kingdom for Ł234.98 inc vat. This is a good price, and very similar to 1000W/1250W 80 Plus Gold Certified units. If they could drop the price to Ł199.99 inc vat however it would sell many more units to the high end audience.
Pros:
  • Excellent performance.
  • great noise suppression.
  • low to moderate noise, even at 1,300W+
  • can handle any system.
  • price point.
Cons:
  • cables aren’t protected as they enter the chassis.
  • physically large.
  • no power button.

3R System AK6-500M Power Supply Review -Hardwaresecrets

Citat:
The 3R System AK6-500M proved to be a nice mainstream power supply with a modular cabling system. Its highlights include efficiency between 81.6% and 85.8%, superb voltage regulation, and the presence of two six/eight-pin connectors for video cards, since most 500 W units will bring only one of them.

Noise and ripple levels were too high on the +3.3 V, +5VSB, and -12 V outputs for us to consider this unit “flawless,” but they were still inside the allowed range.
If you are looking for a mainstream 500 W power supply with a modular cabling system and are able to find this power supply in your country, it can be a good pick.

Antec EarthWatts Platinum 650W - Think Computers

Citat:
This is the first 80PLUS Platinum certified power supply that we have seen from Antec and for an for the entry-level segment they have done a pretty good job. In our testing the voltage regulation on all three rails was just over 1% which is really good. You can not go wrong with the Platinum rating either. This will keep your electricity bill down especially if you are using this power supply on your main rig. The build quality of the power supply was good and I liked that all of the cables were sleeved. I really would have liked to have seen more than two PCI-Express connectors, most 650W power supplies have four.

Pros:
- Voltage regulation under 5%
- 80PLUS Platinum certified
- Quality built
Cons:
- Only 2 PCI-Express connector

FSP Aurum Pro 850 W Power Supply Review - Hardwaresecrets

Citat:
The FSP Aurum Pro 850 W is a step above other 80 Plus Gold power supplies from FSP thanks to its improved design. For the higher-wattage models, FSP decided to go with a resonant design using two transformers, which is superior to the cheaper active clamp reset forward design. The obvious side effect is a higher price tag. However, at USD 180, it is still a very competitive power supply for the high-end enthusiast. For instance, the Enermax Platimax 850 W costs USD 250 and brings efficiency only two points higher, and other 850 W units with the 80 Plus Gold certification are in the same price range (USD 180 – USD 200).

The main competitor for the FSP Aurum Pro 850 W is the Corsair AX850W, which is also a great power supply, but this model from FSP achieved higher efficiency during our tests, and brings the fan control cables, which don’t exist on competing products. Another great advantage of the reviewed unit is the out-of-the-box support for four high-end video cards.
Of course, if you are an average user, there are more affordable, good-quality power supplies with high efficiency out there. However, if you are an enthusiast building a computer with several video cards and want “the best” power supply around, the new FSP Aurum Pro 850 W is the product for you.

Rosewill Hive 750 Watt PSU review - guru3d

Citat:
We found a nice surprise with this unit as when you consider the price point and the feature set, this unit is simply a great deal. 750 Watts of power, 6 standard molex, 4 6/8 pin PCI-E 8 and SATA connectors!
The 8 SATA connectors is great with newer DIY systems supporting RAID or JBOD, some PSU will leave you reach for molex to SATA adapters so it was a nice surprise to see these.
You also have enough connectors for a simple 2 way Sli or Crossfire system for those interested in trying their hand at a modern graphics array.

The build quality seems to be good as you can expect these days from a modern brand. It's a PSU with decent 80+ Bronze efficiency that won't cost you an arm and a leg to purchase, as such it comes recommended. Brinze will offer you a nice 85% efficiency at 50% load.

Kingwin Absolute Platinum 550 W - techPowerUP

Citat:
  • High efficiency
  • Delivered full power at over 50°C
  • Tight voltage regulation at +12V
  • Good ripple suppression
  • Really quiet operation
  • It goes fanless at lower loads/ambient
  • Great price/performance ratio
  • No MOV in the transient filtering stage
  • No option to bypass fanless mode
  • Poor bundle
The cooperation between Kingwin and Super Flower seems grow as time passes and the latest outcome of this partnership is the Absolute Platinum line, which consists of two Platinum units that won't clean out your wallet. Today's review sample, the AP-550, performed excellent in almost all of my tests and besides the affordable price surely the most interesting characteristic is the truly amazing efficiency it achieves throughout the whole load range. PSUs that peak at over 93% efficiency and provide 85% efficiency at 40W are unique. So far I haven't seen any PSU register such high efficiency levels at ultra low loads, so this unit will be a dream come true for systems with low energy demands.
On top of that voltage regulation at +12V is tight, ripple suppression is excellent and output noise is almost non-existant, since this unit goes fanless most of the time, even at higher ambient temparatures. Here I should note that since the fan, even at full speed, is really quiet I would like to have the option to constantly engage it because personally I don't feel so comfortable when the PSU works fanless at 60% load and over 35°C ambient. This means excess and unnecessary stress on the internal components, especially the caps, for which 10°C hotter means 50% shorter lifetime

NZXT Premium Cables Starter Kit

Citat:
Premium Cables

NZXT is a name that many of us associate with unique quality cases like the Tempest Series, one of my personal favorites. More recently the folks over at NZXT have branched out into case accessories and even gaming mice. Today we will be looking at their Premium Cables Starter Kit. The Premium Cables line provides DIY builders with an attractive alternative to customizing your cables manually all in a single package.

In the Starter Kit you get the following

- CB 6V - 6Pin VGA Extension
- CB 24P - 24Pin Motherboard Extension
- CB 8P - 8Pin Motherboard Extension
- CB 8V - 6Pin to 6+2Pin VGA Extension

Each of these cables along with 15 other cable types can be purchased individually as well. By offering all of the common core cables together NZXT has created a sort of PC dress up kit for the majority of system configurations. The kit is offered in both black and white and if you need additional colors you can purchase the red cables individually.

I used the Starter Kit in my latest build featuring the Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid, the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 2 and the Thermaltake Overseer RX-1 case. The Thermaltake case is larger than many mid tower designs making the added length a bonus as I route things neatly out of sight.

The all black interior looks much cleaner with the standard 24 pin leads replaced by the individually sleeved cables of the CB 24P. I can also see the value in using the kit to pre-wire your entire system and then route the wires back to the power supply individually.

Premium Cables are definitely a luxury item but the practical applications are there as well. I will be considering a set of NZXT Premium Cables for every windowed build I tackle going forward. Not only do they provide a clean an attractive look but are easy to install and feature high quality construction.

FSP Aurum Pro Gold 1200-watt Power Supply Review - Tweaktown

Citat:
FSP's AU-1200PRO is a very mixed bag of tricks. On one hand, we have a power supply with excellent power regulation, good DC output quality and excellent efficiency. 1200 watts is a lot of power to put out cleanly and efficiently and to make it all come together like FSP has done is no small task. The addition of flat, modular cabling was much needed by FSP and goes along great with the AU-1200PRO. Once you figure in the price of about $225 for a 1200-watt unit capable of providing power to three video cards with a five year warranty, you've got a serious contender for those in the market for a power supply that can do more than 1kW.

Unfortunately, FSP has made a few poor selections with the unit that will severely limit the viability of the unit for a vast majority of those who are in the market for such a powerful unit. The decision to utilize the same modular connection for the fourth set of PCI-E connectors and the second EPS12V connector means that most won't be able use this power supply if they intend to use it in a four-way video card system. The odd selection of connector availability and cable layout doesn't help matters either, but it shouldn't be a huge setback for most.

OCZ FATAL1TY Series 1000 W Review -
TPU

Citat:
  • Delivered full power at 50°C
  • High efficiency
  • Good voltage regulation overall
  • Low ripple
  • Exclusive use of Japan made caps
  • Semi-modular cabling design
  • Indy-sleeved cables
  • Red-LED lighted fan
  • 5 year warranty
  • High price
  • Some quality problems in the internals
  • Noisy fan (at full speed)
  • Workmanship on the indy-sleeved cables could be better
  • LED lighting on the fan cannot be turned off
Let's start with the many positives of the OCZ Fatal1ty 1000W. For starters this unit truly can deliver its full power at very high ambient temperatures and at the same time efficiency is kept at high levels. Also voltage regulation on all rails is satisfactory and the use of Japanese caps everywhere in its internals means that the unit's reliability is increased and its good performance will be kept at the same levels for quite long. That's because performance drops due to aging are smaller in Japan made caps, when compared to their cheaper Chinese counterparts. Moreover the great ripple suppression and the five year warranty complete the picture. By now you will be wondering, why I haven't mentioned the indy-sleeved cables yet. Well, I kept this part for last because this kind of sleeving is not for everyone. Many regular users won't be bothered at all while pro modders prefer to add them by their own. All other users will certainly appreciate the sleeved cables, although they add much to the final price and their workmanship is not top notch. We judged the looks from the perspective of a picky modder, for an industrialized approach like on the OCZ Fatal1ty some compromises have to be made.

Let's take a look now at the downsides I spotted. On top of this list resides the high price, which as I already stated is greatly affected by the indy-sleeved cables. I wish OCZ provided the same PSU with regular cables at a much lower price. I think many users would be really interested. Another problem is the loud noise that the fan outputs, at least at high RPMs. Moreover I would like the see a switch installed, to turn off the LED lighting of the fan. Finally the indy-sleeved cables could be implemented better and in the internals I spotted a melted heatshrink which most likely is an isolated event but surely is something that was missed by quality control. Exposed wires can cause dangerous shorts, so this is something that should be avoid. Some points of the final rating were cut for this alone.

To sum up, if you are into the modding game and don't have the time, patience or knowledge to build your own indy-sleeved wiring then the Fatal1ty 1000W is a good option since it packs this feature along with good performance. Currently there is a mail in rebate running which reduces the final price to 220 bucks, still not so affordable but do not forget that indy-sleeving combined with a high-end PSU makes an expensive combination. Finally, I am gonna give a recommendation to this PSU mainly because it performed really well during all tests I conducted and this is clearly shown in the corresponding graph. Its high price is justified by the specially sleeved cables it features, which may be of no special importance to some but others will highly appreciate them

Super Flower Golden King 500 W - TechPowerUp

Citat:
Postat în original de TechPowerUp
Today we will review the smallest member of Super Flower's Golden King series. As a side note, most likely you will agree with us that this series doesn't have the optimum name since all of its seven members are 80 Plus Platinum certified. Back to our subject, the model number of the small King with 500W capacity is SF-500P14PE. Like all of its bigger brothers besides high efficiency this unit promises ultra-quiet operation, since at lower internal temperatures it goes fanless. If you still want to see the fan spinning at all temperatures you can toggle the thermal control switch. Unfortunately to cut the production cost, thus lower its price, Super Flower didn't use a modular cabling system for the SF-500P14PE. We know that most of you will be disappointed since modular cables are very practical but unfortunately add significant cost, so they are the the first to go when a manufacturer wants to reduce production cost.

Kingwin Lazer Platinum 850 W Power Supply Review - Hardwaresecrets

Citat:
The Kingwin Lazer Platinum 850 W proved to be an excellent power supply, with efficiency between 89.5% and 91.9%, voltages closer to their nominal values than required (3% voltage regulation), and extremely low noise and ripple levels. It also comes with an excellent price tag for what it has to offer. Other 850 W power supplies with the 80 Plus Platinum certification, such as the Enermax Platimax 850 W, are 20% more expensive. In fact, the Lazer Platinum 850 W is available in the same price range of high-end 850 W power supplies with the 80 Plus Gold certification, such as the FSP Aurum Pro 850 W and the Corsair AX850W.

The only negative we saw with this power supply was its cable configuration. We think a high-end 850 W power supply with the 80 Plus Platinum certification deserved more SATA connectors and a total of six video card power cables, allowing you to install three high-end video cards without the need of adapters.
In summary, if you are thinking of buying a high-end 850 W power supply with the 80 Plus Gold certification, you may want to consider the Kingwin Lazer Platinum 850 W, which is in the same price range and offers higher efficiency. However, if the relatively low number of cables and connectors is an issue for you, you will have to pick a different product.

Antec High Current Pro Platinum 1000W Review - TPU

Citat:

  • High efficiency
  • Delivered full power at over 50°C ambient
  • Excellent ripple suppresion
  • Tight voltage regulation at +12V
  • Top-notch workmanship
  • Japanese caps used all over
  • Quiet operation
  • Very low consumption in standby mode
  • High Price
  • Low power 5VSB rail
After fully evaluating the Antec HCP-1000 it is time to answer the pressing question: Is the new Platinum HCP unit a worthy successor to the famous HCP-1200 ? The answer is definitely yes. The new Platinum unit aced all tests I conducted and easily proved that currently it is one of the best 1kW units on the market. With such low ripple on all rails, good voltage regulation overall, resilience to extremely high ambient temperatures, quiet operation even at high loads and of course top quality components used, this unit is a worthy opponent to the king of our charts, the mighty Seasonic Platinum 1000W. The Antec HCP-1000 has a stiff price, which however is the same as the price of its direct competitor, but I think that when it comes to PSUs you must see their purchase as an investment since most likely they will be used for many years, save you money if they are efficient and at the same time protect your system. They will also relieve you from any power issues you would face with a cheap PSU. Antec provides a seven year warranty with this unit and their excellent customer service will ensure your long peace of mind.

To sum up, HCP-1000 is one of the best performing PSUs I tested so far and it will easily handle power hungry systems equipped with up to three high-end VGAs. If you can afford it then you should put it on the top of your list since besides excellent performance, it has to offer quiet operation throughout a wide load range. Finally, although the Antec HCP-1000 fulfilled all of my expectations I am eager to see a Platinum 1200W unit from Antec/Delta which will continue the legend of the HCP-1200.

The Antec High Current Pro Platinum 1000W retails for $259.99

Cooler Master is well known for a variety of PC components, cases, peripherals and such. Cooler Master has a wide selection of power supplies available to cater to just about any builder's needs. Today we are looking at one of their power supplies that is geared towards high-end enthusiasts.

The selection of power supplies above 1000-watt has been increasing steadily over the past year or so. The Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 1300-watt power supply is one of the new contenders.

The power supply offers full modular cabling, quad-GPU support, 80Plus Gold efficiency, an integrated fan controller and has enough power to cook a frozen dinner faster than my microwave. All of this doesn't matter much unless the unit performs well.

OCZ Fatal1ty 1000W - PureOverclock

Citat:

The Fatal1ty 1000W power supply looks to continue the tradition of strong power supplies by OCZ, and this unit successfully accomplishes that, delivering great features and excellent performance. Aesthetically speaking, the OCZ Fatal1ty 100W is an extraordinarily eye catching unit, and when plugged in, it lights up in a brilliant red. This is definitely a gamer’s power supply the way it is all dressed up; it may or may not be your thing to have your chassis lit in red, but if you’re into such things then this unit will be right up your alley.
From a feature standpoint, the accessories included in this package are good and show attention to detail. There is a good assortment of sleeved cables that support serious SLI/CrossFire setups.
The modular setup will help keep the cables to a minimum inside your case, and the lengths are fine for any mid-tower case, though a full tower case may pose problems if you want to route the cables behind the motherboard tray as they may not cleanly reach all the connectors. The individually sleeved cables are obviously the hallmark of this unit, though they are more bulky than traditional ones. That's fine, but we really were hoping to see red cables rather than black; unfortunately they're kind of visually lost when installed in a case, unless you have some smart lighting inside to show them off somehow.

From a functional standpoint, the unit boasts excellent voltage regulation and noise suppresssion, Japanese capacitors for 105°C, and 80PLUS Gold efficiency. We didn't experience any dropoff in the +12V rail when we pushed things to the limit, but the included fan gets a bit louder than we'd prefer to see when under full load.
