Corsair Accelerator 60GB Caching SSD Review - VR Zone

Quote:
Corsair offers the Accelerator in three versions – 30GB, 45GB and 60GB. We reviewed the 60GB version today which, without virtually any over-provisioning, gave us a full 60GB of available hot-cache and therefore displayed amazing long-use consistency; it would be truly hard to evict 60GB worth of data during everyday use. We found the 60GB version retailing for 85 USD (105 SGD) at the time of this review. While the price is very reasonable, the competition is going to be heavy. However, the 30GB version of the Accelerator retails for as low as 50 USD (63 SGD), offering an excellent option to entry-level and home users who would like to greatly enhance their system’s performance. Even though the 30GB might sound too few to some people, they are actually more than enough for the average home user and gamer.
A very strong advantage of the Corsair Accelerator is that the device is virtually plug and play; simply install the drive into the system, install the Dataplex software and the Accelerator will come to the aid of your primary drive. Not only the OS does not have to be re-installed but there will be virtually no change to the system the Accelerator is installed into. Unfortunately however, the Accelerator is capable of enhancing the performance of the primary drive only and not of any other disk installed in the system.

Samsung: MLC NAND flash overkill for most users

Quote:
TechWorld reports Samsung is touting triple-level cell (TLC) NAND flash memory is a way to make fast solid state disks available to a wider audience. The new type of flash is slower than MLC and has a lower longetivity, but Samsung believes that MLC may be overkill for the needs for the average user. TLC is currently used in some memory cards and USB flash drives, as well as low-end eReaders and sat nav devices, but Samsung believes TLC might make the leap to mainstream gear at some point.
Samsung acknowledges the longevity and error issues, which can be partly solved through error correction and digital signal processing. But the company believes that MLC flash, the kind used in most laptops and tablets today, may be overkill for the needs of the average user. If TLC can keep working for however long a user keeps a machine, that machine may cost the consumer less, he said.

It's up to device makers to decide whether TLC is good enough, Smith added. Whether it can go the distance is a complicated question. A typical rule of thumb in the industry for laptop use is writing 20GB of data per day to the device, over a period of perhaps three years, he said. That includes files created or downloaded as well as temporarily cached web pages and other items.

Using that standard, "TLC is on the borderline unless some special error correction or signal processing gives you some margin," Wong said. But the 20GB rule may be more than the average user needs, he added. With tablets in particular, consumers tend not to create and store much content, though tablets typically have less flash capacity and therefore fewer cells to work with over the life of the product, Wong said.

WD VelociRaptor 1TB 10K RPM SATA III Hard Drive Review - Hothardware

Quote:
The new WD VelociRaptor 1TB is the fastest consumer-class hard drive we have tested to date. Versus the previous generation VelociRaptor 600GB drive, the new 1TB model comes out ahead virtually across the board, especially in terms of write performance. Versus the higher-capacity 7200 RPM drives we tested, the new VelociRaptor also comes out mostly ahead as well. It was only with the smallest transfer sizes (<4K) in the ATTO Disk Benchmark that the WD VelociRaptor 1TB offered middling performance, but once transfer sizes increased beyond that point, WD’s new flagship sprinted past the other drives and dominated. Sequential and random transfers and access times have all been improved with the new VelociRaptor versus WD’s previous generation.

  • Fastest HD Yet
  • Nearly Double The Capacity Of Previous VelociRaptor
  • SATA 6G Support
  • 64MB Cache
  • 5-Year Warranty
  • High Cost Per GB Versus 7200RPM Hard Drives
  • SSDs More Affordable Then Ever

Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB Hard Drive Review -
Legit Reviews

Quote:
Users can expect a 25% increase (according to WD) in performance and we saw sequential read/write scores that exceeded the rated specifications of 200MB/s. This is supported by a large 64MB cache to help buffer data. Overall, for a spinning platter drive, performance was very good and it's a bit amazing that they've been able to get so much capacity in a drive with the platters rotating at 10,000 RPM. With such speeds, you'd expect the drive to be noisy but even on our open test bed, the noise was better than our aging 300GB model and is listed at 30 dBA idle and 37 dBA in performance seek mode. At no time did the drive ever feel overly hot to the touch so the attached heat sink does a nice job of siphoning off any heat being generated by the drive. Reliability shouldn't be an issue with a specification of 1.4 million hours MTBF and a five year warranty.

Western Digital's VelociRaptor 1TB -
Tech Report

Quote:
The VelociRaptor 1TB is easily the fastest mechanical hard drive we've tested. In addition to offering the highest sequential transfer rates, it delivers best-in-class access times. The VelociRaptor's 10k-RPM spindle speed deserves much of the credit, and the move to higher-density platters allows the new model to improve upon the old one's performance while also offering an extra 400GB of storage capacity. As we saw throughout our test suite, the VelociRaptor's performance falls between SSDs and slower-rotating mechanical drives. So does its cost per gigabyte. I'm just not sure how many desktop users are looking for storage in that middle ground. Most of them would probably be better served by the combination of a solid-state boot drive backed by secondary mechanical storage. Indeed, one could pair WD's own Caviar Black 1TB with a 128GB SSD for less than the new VelociRaptor's $320 asking price.
Capacity is the only advantage the VelociRaptor has over the growing field of solid-state drives. Modern SSDs are faster across the board. They're pricier, of course, but only per gigabyte. Our favorite SSD, the Samsung 830 Series 256GB, has been selling for around $300, or $20 less than the new VelociRaptor's suggested retail price. The VelociRaptor offers four times the storage capacity, though.

ADATA Premier Pro SP900 (0-provision) 256GB Solid State Drive Review - Tweaktown

Quote:
The SP900 that we are looking at today has the new 0 provision programming which is pretty cool on paper, but in real-life use it has little meaning. You can fill your SSD with more data, but no one wants to do that because the drive slows down too much. The async models are going to take a bigger performance hit so the SP900 gets a double whammy when full. Just because you have it doesn't mean you need to use it.

The issues for the SP900 don't stop there though. As this article turns into a total hit piece I'm reminded that ADATA was once a very good SSD manufacture that competed heavily in the low cost price game. That is no longer the case. At the time of writing the SP900 256GB sells for $309.99 at Newegg. To ADATA's credit this is a new product and Newegg artificially inflates new product prices, but that still isn't an excuse for the SP900 256GB async flash drive to cost a full $109 more than the Corsair Force Series 3 240GB ($199.99 after a $30 mail-in-rebate). The Muskin Chronos Deluxe with very good 34nm Toshiba Toggle Mode flash, AKA the really, really good stuff sells for just $249.99 at Newegg and at 50% full (of data on the drive) delivers nearly twice the performance of the SP900.

Somewhere along the path ADATA has lost their way. Two years ago this drive wouldn't have hit the market at this price or in this condition. We can't pin all of the issues on ADATA, but we certainly can't say they aren't without fault either. Hopefully someone over there is able to get it together and give us back the quality of products that earned ADATA several awards for their SSDs in the past.
