Plextor M3P 256GB SATA 3 SSD – Absolutely Marvell-ous Performance - TheSSDReview

Quote:
Lopping 2.5mm off the z-height of the M3 Standard’s chassis has made the drive compatible with a wider range of ultrathin laptops. It also ratchets up the visual appeal of the drive a notch. Good looks are appreciated, but it’s the firmware that truly sets this drive apart from the M3S. The firmware upgrade bestowed upon the Pro has given it some truly impressive performance gains over an already impressive M3.
Both the Pro and Standard Plextor M3 SSDs carry a rarely seen 5 year warranty. This is certainly one of those stats that can and does sway consumers when making purchasing decisions. Plextor would prefer to have their offerings thought of as enterprise SSDs given respect to their components, and so they tout their enterprise-grade Marvell controller and premium Japanese NAND flash memory (though it’s actually made in Taiwan). While few servers are probably going to get equipped with M3 Pros, the enterprise grade ethos is good to see. The Japanese company is also happy to point out that they spend 20 hours burning in and testing every SSD they make. As a result, Plextor claims their SSDs have an annualized failure rate of only 0.5%.

Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB SATA3 SSD Review - Futurelooks

Quote:
There’s no arguing that the HyperX 3K SSD is a worthy choice among a market full of options. The 3K NAND and SandForce SF-2281 controller work together well providing a little more speed as well as added endurance. Granted, the question of endurance unfortunately can’t be fully measured even with a few months use. However, some of that endurance and resilience is visible after running repeated tests that start to weigh down the NAND. Like the V+200 Enterprise series, the HyperX 3K manages its resources well and should last for many years.

Overall, the Kingston HyperX 3K series SSDs offers everything you want and need from an SSD and more. You really do get it all at an even more affordable price point. Definitely an Editors’ Choice calibre product, making the winning streak unbroken thus far.
Pros
  • HyperX synchronous performance
  • Great upgrade bundle kit
  • Attractive black housing
  • Best retail value at $329.99
  • 3K NAND manages loads better
Cons
  • Price limits speed adoption

As Latest SSD Prices Hit $0.65 per Gigabyte, OCZ Forecasts Further Drop of Costs.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/storage..._of_Costs.html

"With recent NAND flash price decreases, we have been able to introduce market leading products with price points of approximately $0.65 per gigabyte without negatively impacting our gross margins. These cost reductions continue to drive SSD adoption and we feel it is critical to continue to drive cost down. With that, we planned to launch both 10nm-class memory and TLC support during the year subject to NAND availability. In short, we expect recent declines in NAND flash pricing to make SSDs more attractive to mainstream applications such as SANs, network appliances, ultrabooks and mainstream servers," said Ryan Petersen, chief executive officer of OCZ Technology

Zalman F1 Series 120GB SSD Review - HardwareLOOK

Quote:
The Zalman F1 Series 120GB SSD was an unexpected delight. Its speeds are consistent with other SSDs sporting the new second-generation controller platform. After first initial testing, eyes started to open up on the Zalman F1 and high expectations are now in place future Zalman SSD models. Although we do not have the results here just yet, we do know that the F1 is in keeping with the likes of the Corsair Force GT 120GB and the Kingston HyperX SSD series. Zalman have been claiming that the F1 is actually faster than its competitors, but we know that it is only equal in performance.
As said in the review, the SF-2281/SF-2282 controllers in the new 2nd-gen SSDs are going to have the same performance mark; it is really only the amount of flash-based memory that now is effecting speeds. So the real question when deciding which brand and model to purchase, all comes down to price and potentially if the SSD is using the 3.3.2 firmware, as this seems to coincidentally be the best performing firmware in all the top quality 2.5” Solid State Drives.

The price of the Zalman F1 Series SSD for each model is a very reasonable price considering the great performance gain you get over many of the SSD brands on the market with the same storage capacity and price. The Zalman F1 Series SSD 120GB version is price at around £150.

OCZ Releases Firmware Enhancement for Vertex 4 SSDs and Intros 64 GB Model

Quote:
OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a leading provider of high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) for computing devices and systems, today introduced release candidate firmware v1.4RC, which dramatically improves the performance of its Vertex 4 SATA 3.0 Series SSDs. Most notably, v1.4RC nearly doubles sequential write performance for lower capacity models, significantly boosts sequential read performance at low queue depths, and improves general performance under real-world workloads comprising mixed reads and writes.

Despite already achieving breakthrough levels of performance with its flagship Vertex 4, OCZ has taken aggressive strides to further distance itself from the competition and to maintain its undisputed leadership in SSD technology. Compared to Vertex 4's original firmware version v1.3, v1.4RC more than doubles sequential write performance of the 128 GB model and boosts the 256 GB model from 380 MB/s to 465 MB/s. These dramatic gains were achieved through proprietary algorithms which orchestrate the sequence of physical NAND programming operations to ensure that each NAND device is optimally utilized at all times. For the mainstream user, entry-level capacities of Vertex 4 can now achieve nearly the same sequential write performance as the industry-leading 512GB model at a mere fraction of the cost.

OCZ Vertex 4 SSD - Progress in the Firmware (testing with v1.4RC) Review -
Tweaktown

Quote:
Thirty days is about what it took for OCZ to increase the read speed by around 150MB/s on the 512GB model at one transfer. That's not too bad at all; I can't wait to see what the next update brings. Users on the other hand might be a bit disappointed in the firmware progression. The reason why I say that is because this update is a destructive update. You will need to backup or clone your data before performing the update or your data will be lost. Destructive updates are a bit of a pain in the ass. When it comes to my personal systems I tend to wait to do the update for when I reformat or rebuild a system.

The Vertex 4 update is destructive, but on the other hand the performance increase is significant, at least in the benchmarks. As I've stated, we have not ran this new firmware in a daily use system yet and that is unfortunate. The real beauty of the Vertex 4 is how it feels and not so much how it looks in the performance charts. If the read latency would have stayed the same we wouldn't really worry about a change in the feel, but the read latency increased and with the 512GB model it doubled.

The pesky 200MB/s read limit has gone away, something we are grateful of. If you are a power user or someone who transfers large files, you'll enjoy the new 309MB/s to 345MB/s read speed as measured in HD Tune Pro. I download my Linux installs to the OS SSD so the PAR and RAR can take advantage of the high IOPS and then transfer them to a high capacity spinner array once the intense workload has completed. This is one area where the 200MB/s limit was noticeable and unwelcome. When working with 45 to 50GB ISO files, the extra bandwidth is significant.

OCZ has made significant progress with their new flagship Vertex 4 line up, but I doubt this will be the last time we test a new firmware for this drive. Indilinx Infused A.K.A OCZ firmware engineers will continue to increase the performance of the Vertex 4 just like we've observed with other OCZ SSDs in the past.

OCZ Vertex 4 SSD revisited with FW 1.4RC review
-
Guru3D

Quote:
The Vertex 4 series have a strong basis and leaves me with thirst for some more. Realistically for those on Vertex 3 or for that matter any modern slash proper SATA3 based SSD -- you'll hardly miss out on anything. If anything the Vertex 4 uses the same performance bracket as Vertex 3 with the new firmware.
Once the new 1.4 Firmware will be released to the public, the SSD however will be at the performance level you may expect it to be. We certainly had some reservations when we peeked at the SSD series initially, but yes the v1.4 firmware is going to make a tremendous difference. So once you have v1.4 flashed in there performance to previously tested SSD units for the Vertex 4 SATA3 SSDs simply is really good, admittedly here and there we still noticed offsets in performance compared to the competition, but that was in two tests only.
Some overall recommendations then. Should you be in the market for a SATA3 SSD then we have a couple of hints though, we absolutely prefer the performance of the Intel Series 6 (H67/P67/Z68/X79/Z77) integrated SATA 6G controller over anything else available in the market. If you run an AMD chipset with the added Marvell 6G controller for example, you will see lower performance, make no mistake about that. The Asmedia controllers we spotted lately on motherboards is offering good performance, albeit still 25% slower then Intel. Also make sure you run your drive in AHCI mode, it does make a significant difference.

OCZ Petrol 128GB SSD review

Quote:

A tale of two Thunderbolt storage devices: Seagate's GoFlex Desk and WD's Thunderbolt Duo

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5797/a...hunderbolt-duo

"....Each Thunderbolt port handles 40 Gbps of aggregate bandwidth, consisting of two pairs' worth of distinct 10 Gbps transmit and receive lanes. Thunderbolt isn't so much about enabling the connection of discrete storage devices (although it has been used for just that by many early peripherals), but new PC form factors instead. If you have to give up GigE, Firewire 800 and a gigantic screen to build a sleek Ultrabook, Thunderbolt will give you access to those things via an external display. Did I mention that Thunderbolt carries DisplayPort as well as PCIe?
To date Thunderbolt has mostly only appeared on Macs, but the Apple exclusivity period is now over. This year we'll see the emergence of more affordable second-generation controller ICs, resulting in Thunderbolt showing up in a diversity of PC platforms and form factors....."

Data Memory Systems Celerity 6G Plus 120GB - Tweaktown

Quote:
When it comes to performance, the drive is a beast. A big part of that comes from the new 3.3.4 firmware, but the choice of flash also plays a role. The 6G Plus is also very stable, another credit to the firmware. This is the kind of SSD that you buy and use for several years. Sure, there are newer drives with new 24nm flash, but DMS hasn't jumped on that bandwagon and is keeping the 6G Plus reliable.

All things considered the DMS Celerity 6G Plus is a good release, but I think the price is going to hold most of you back from ordering. It's too bad we didn't test this drive when the SF-2281 era started because the price would have fit with the mainstream SSD makers. The additional exposure might have given DMS the opportunity to battle it out in the low cost arena.

We'll keep an eye on Data Memory Systems for future releases and let you know what comes down the pipe. The company has been around for more than 20 years, so they aren't going to fade away any time soon.

SuperSSpeed Hyper SLC SSD Review - en.Expreview

Quote:
Undoubtedly the two SuperSSpeed Hyper SLC SSDs are now the strongest SATA-based products, under the aid of powerful SLC, 64GB SSD is able to defeat MLC-based 256GB in performance, naturally the SLC-based 128GB outperforms 60GB slightly, they are absolutely the performance King.
You may think that the two SLC-based SSDs will cost players much money, however, according to SuperSSpeed, the pricings will be set close to that of the MLC-based models. If so, the SSD market must be more competitive.

Corsair Accelerator 30GB & 60GB Review - Neoseeker

Quote:
The Corsair Accelerator series of SSD cache drives is designed to be an easy and cost effective upgrade to an existing system, and in most regards Corsair achieved this aim perfectly. Looking at the benchmark figures alone, both the 30GB and 60GB models substantially improved the performance of our test system. According to the results, the drives helped reduce the time it took to load into Windows by 28%, as well as cut the shut down time by 30%. Additionally, the drives helped improved performance of daily tasks such as file transfers, starting applications and loading into games. The drives achieve this by working in tandem with an existing HDD, so you get the performance boost without deleting any data or reinstalling Windows.
The software that comes with the drives is another aspect we liked. Not only was it easy to install, but it learns which programs are used the most and gives those priority. This on-the-fly learning makes the drive more efficient over time, as the programs used the most are cached for quicker access times. We have used other similar software utilities in the past such as Acronis True Image, and we found the NVELO software to be more user friendly and quicker to install.

World Exclusive: Phison's new S8 SATA III Controller with Type B 24nm NAND Pictured

Quote:
Let's just be honest about it, when you think of high performance solid state drive controllers the Phison name doesn't exactly jump to the top of the list. That isn't going to change anytime soon but Phison isn't looking to take on the SandForce or Marvell's of the world.

Let's break it down like this, 512GB capacity for less than 500 Dollars with 460MB/s read and 315MB/s write speed. Given that most other 512/480GB solutions are currently hovering around the 700 Dollar mark this is something to get excited about.

Then there's the performance. We didn't get a quote from the company or a specifications list but the 460MB/s read and 315MB/s write speeds were from our tests in ATTO with the very first firmware build for the new controller (S8FM0001). A performance firmware is expected to hit our lab in early June, just in time for Computex or at the latest July, just in time for retail.

The image above is not just the first know picture of the new Phison S8 Controller but also the first picture of new Toshiba Toggle Mode Type B NAND flash. Given the large price difference between the Type A and Type B we think this is change that increased yield, much like IMFT's new third generation 25nm flash. The new Type B flash does increase the speed from Toggle 1 (166MB/s) to Toggle 2 (200MB/
s).

Over the last month we've read reports, or at least one that stated that the large SSD manufactures like Intel and Crucial were making a power play to drive smaller companies out of the SSD market. It is true that prices are coming down rapidly but it isn't because the big boys are looking to smash the little guys. It all has to do with the price of the flash. NAND flash production is on the rise and the percentage of usable flash has increased with refinements to the manufacturing process. This is why we see SSD pricing dropping so quickly now.

The drive pictured above is the MyDigitalSSD BP3. We'll have a full review of the new BulletProof 3 512GB for you tomorrow. MyDigitalSSD has always been on the cutting edge of new technology and didn't feel the need to wait till Computex to show off their new low cost SATA III entry.

MyDigitalSSD is also preparing a new BP3 mSATA line using the same controller and Type B flash. Pricing is very attractive compared to just about everything else on the market, very close to $1 per GB! This mark is becoming common with 2.5" form factor drives but until now the mSATA drives had a significant price premium.

Comay Venus Pro 3 128GB Solid State Drive Review - TweakTown

Quote:
The only thing we can really complain about is the lack of worldwide and US resellers carrying Comay Venus Pro 3 products. Well, that and the desktop adapter bracket... we always like to see those included. Over time we think the Comay brand will start to pop up at more and more e-tail sites. If I wasn't about to pick up another Ducati, I'd buy a 100 drives and we'd sell them here on TweakTown. On second thought, no I wouldn't because who would want to send TweakTown sample SSDs if we were selling them? The small conflict of interest thing might get in the way of our progress. Heh.

Let's talk performance first. With the SandForce 3.3.2 firmware, we get solid 3.3.2 performance from a drive that is reliable. The Comay Venus Pro 3 delivers average to a little higher than average performance for its class, our tongue in cheek Team SandForce drive. There is nothing wrong with that, in most capacity sizes the Team SandForce option is the fastest available consumer drive on the market. In the 120GB capacity size though, that title goes to the Plextor M3 Pro, but the Venus Pro 3 is very close to the M3 Pro performance.

The big draw for this drive will obviously be the inclusion of the enterprise power scheme. It's what makes the Venus Pro 3 unique. Since this feature started out in the enterprise and now more enterprise users are taking advantage of consumer low-cost SSDs, I can see the database guys eating these up. To a lesser extent, notebook users may find benefit from the Comay Venus Pro 3 power features as well. Notebooks tend to get us in trouble at least once a year when someone unplugs the power and the battery slowly dies taking that review we're working on with it. At least with the host power loss protection, the chances of the document being stored on the flash increases. Also, the switch between unplugged and plugged in can do odd things to sensitive components, an area we'd worry less about with the Venus Pro 3.
